The experience

The funicular train climbs Penang Hill to 833 meters, where colonial bungalows dot the cooler heights and a panoramic view opens across George Town and mainland Butterworth. You spend two hours here, taking in the vantage point the British chose to escape the city's heat. From there the route descends into George Town's UNESCO-listed streets, the oldest colonial quarter in Malaysia, where you walk the heritage architecture and stop at Wat Chayamangkalaram to see its 33-meter gold-plated Reclining Buddha, one of the largest in the world.

Kek Lok Si Temple, built in 1891 and expanded into one of Southeast Asia's largest, combines Chinese, Thai and Burmese architectural styles across its tiers. A 30.2-meter bronze Guan Yin statue crowns the highest point. An inclined lift carries you partway up. On the way you stop for free samples of Penang's white coffee at Coffee Tree and watch pewter craftsmen demonstrate their work at Crown Pewter, showing how the handicraft is made by hand. The tour ends with return transport to your hotel in an air-conditioned vehicle.

Departure is 9:30 AM from your hotel lobby, where you should wait 15 minutes before the scheduled time. The driver may run 10 to 15 minutes late due to traffic. If the tour runs past six hours, each additional hour is charged on the day. Temple entry requires modest dress covering shoulders, arms and legs: a long dress or pants with a simple top.
