Includes guided activities, traditional lunch & hotel pickup. Book now.★ 5.00 (6)5hUS$ 141View › “Don’t look down,” our guide said, but of course I did — and my legs went all wobbly for a second. The air up here on Mount Kinabalu feels sharper, like it’s been filtered through stone. We’d started in Kota Kinabalu before sunrise, still half-asleep in the van, but by the time we reached Timpohon Gate the mountain was already looming over us. It’s funny how quickly you go from joking about snacks to counting your breaths as you climb. At one point I could smell wet moss and something faintly metallic — maybe my own nerves? Lunch was just a packed sandwich but honestly, it tasted like a feast after those endless stairs.
Pendant Hut is basic but everyone’s too tired to care. There was this moment at the safety briefing where someone asked if “Walk the Torq” meant we’d be hanging off cliffs — our trainer just grinned. I barely slept (snoring, altitude, excitement), so when they woke us at 1:30 am for “supper” (more like dry toast and tea), I wasn’t exactly fresh. But hiking under starlight with headlamps bobbing ahead — there’s something weirdly peaceful about that silence. By the time we reached Low’s Peak for sunrise, my fingers were stiff with cold but wow… I still think about that view. You’re above the clouds and suddenly nothing else matters.
The via ferrata itself? Honestly, scarier than I expected. Clipping onto steel cables at 3,600 meters with your heart thumping is a whole new kind of thrill. Our Mountain Torq trainer kept things light (“Don’t worry, nobody gets left dangling — not for long anyway!”). There’s this part where you cross a wire bridge and every step squeaks — I laughed out loud just to keep moving. Coming down felt endless; my knees hated me but getting that certificate at Kinabalu Park HQ made it all worth it somehow. Not sure I’ll ever eat instant noodles again after that last meal though.
