The experience
The day starts at your hotel at 10am, when your driver collects you for the drive to the National Museum. The building itself is the first landmark: opened in 1963, it sits in traditional Malay and Minangkabau style, its front facade lined with two giant murals of Italian glass mosaic depicting highlights from Malay history and culture. Inside, the galleries hold archaeological finds spanning millennia: stone tools from 200,000 years ago, Neolithic pottery, a replica of Perak Man (reckoned to be 10,000 to 11,000 years old), a bronze Son Dong bell from Vietnam dated to 150AD, and a seated Bodhisattva statue around a thousand years old.
After the museum, the free city tour takes you to four heritage sites across Kuala Lumpur. The National Monument overlooks the KL Lake gardens: a huge bronze structure built to honour soldiers who died during the Communist Insurgency in the 1950s, designed by the same architect who created the Iwo Jima Memorial. Sultan Abdul Samad Building, constructed in 1897, stands as one of the city's most enduring landmarks, with an imposing porch, horseshoe-shaped arches, shiny copper domes and a 41.2-metre clock tower. The ground floor houses a Tourist Information Centre. The National Palace at Jalan Duta, the official residence of Malaysia's king since 2011, covers 97.65 hectares and features traditional Malay design with Islamic artwork created by renowned sculptors from Terengganu and Kelantan, crowned by 22 domes with the largest reaching 44 metres. Merdeka Square marks the site where the Union Jack was lowered to signal independence from colonial rule: one of the city's most important heritage sites.
Transport is included throughout: you travel in an air-conditioned vehicle with your English-speaking driver, who handles the route and the timing. The tour ends with drop-off back at your hotel.
