  • Explore Bcharre town and churches
  • Tour the Gibran Museum
  • Walk in Cedars of God Forest
  • See Monastery of Saint Anthony the Great

The experience

The day starts in Qadisha Valley, one of the earliest settlement sites of Christian monasteries in the world. The valley's caves, monasteries and terraced landscape date back to the first phase of Christianity, and the Monastery of Saint Anthony the Great (built as early as the fourth century and rebuilt after centuries of destruction) still stands at 950 meters above sea level, surrounded by pine, oak and fruit trees. From there, the tour moves to Becharre, the town that preserves the only remaining original Cedars of God and was the birthplace of Kahlil Gibran, the Lebanese writer, painter and sculptor whose museum occupies the former Monastery of Mar Sarkis.

At the Gibran Museum, you walk through 440 original paintings and drawings, his tomb, and the furniture and manuscripts he kept in his New York studio: a biographical record of one of the twentieth century's most influential artists. The museum itself is housed in a restored monastery, so the building carries as much history as the collection inside it. Then comes the Cedars of God Forest, where 375 ancient cedars remain from forests that once covered the region and were prized enough to be cited 103 times in the Bible. The cedar is Lebanon's national symbol and appears on the flag. Standing among the survivors gives the scale of what has been lost and what endures.
