The experience
Jeita Grotto opens the day underground. The upper cave is explored on foot through stalactites and stalagmites up to 8 metres tall, built over millions of years. The lower cave is navigated by silent electric boat along an underground river through chambers of extraordinary natural beauty: all within 30 minutes of your hotel pickup. The grotto is a UNESCO tentative World Heritage Site and ranks among the world's most spectacular cave systems.
From the caves, the Harissa Téléférique cable car takes you from sea level to 650 metres above the Mediterranean in 20 minutes. The aerial views over Jounieh Bay unfold beneath you as you ascend. At the top stands the iconic bronze Shrine of Our Lady of Lebanon, one of the most recognised religious monuments in the Middle East, with panoramic views over the coastline and surrounding landscapes whether you come for the faith or just the scenery.
Baatara Gorge Waterfall delivers the finale: a 255-metre cascade that drops sequentially through three natural limestone bridges carved over millions of years by the Balaa river into Jurassic limestone. Standing at the viewpoint above the gorge, you watch the water disappear through bridge after bridge into the darkness below. The spray, the roar, the sheer scale of the phenomenon: this is the kind of travel moment no photograph fully prepares you for. On the drive back toward Beirut, an optional stop in Byblos (one of the oldest cities on earth) lets you sit by the sea with the ancient fishing port and medieval city walls as your backdrop, finishing the day in a 7,000-year-old city.
