Baatara Waterfall, Aaqoura Lakes & Batroun: Day Trip from Beirut
Three landscapes in one day: a 255-metre waterfall, high-altitude lakes, and a 3,000-year-old seafront
This eight-hour small-group day trip from Beirut combines three distinct natural and historical sites: Baatara Gorge, where a 255-metre waterfall drops through three limestone bridges; Aaqoura's high-altitude lakes framed by cedar forests at over 1,500 metres; and Batroun, a Phoenician coastal town with a 3,000-year-old sea wall still standing on the beach. Hotel pickup and drop-off in Beirut are included, along with an English-speaking driver and air-conditioned transport. Lunch in Batroun is optional and at your own expense.

The experience
The day starts at 9:00 AM with pickup from your Beirut hotel, then climbs north into the Lebanese mountains toward Baatara Gorge. The waterfall itself is a geological anomaly: a 255-metre drop funnelling through three successive natural limestone bridges before vanishing into the gorge below. The walk down to the viewpoint puts you close enough to feel the spray and hear the roar. In spring when snowmelt runs hard, the volume of water is staggering. Even in summer the site is dramatic. This is one of the most photographed natural sites in Lebanon, and the walk down is steep enough to matter but manageable for most fitness levels.
From Baatara, the route heads to Aaqoura: a high-altitude mountain area most Lebanon visitors never reach, which is exactly why it is worth the detour. The lakes sit at over 1,500 metres above sea level, ringed by cedar-forested ridges and mountain panoramas that stretch across the northern highlands. A lakeshore trail lets you walk the shoreline and take in the reflections. The air and the quiet are a complete contrast to the gorge you just left. The drive from Baatara to Aaqoura is roughly 30 minutes.
The afternoon drops down from the mountains to the Mediterranean and Batroun: one of the oldest Phoenician cities in the world and today one of Lebanon's most laid-back coastal towns. The old town's stone streets, Ottoman houses, and seafront cafés have a different energy entirely from the mountain morning. Walk along the ancient Phoenician sea wall, a 3,000-year-old natural rock barrier still standing on the beach. Batroun is also the home of Lebanon's craft beer scene, and fresh mezze and seafood at the waterfront restaurants are worth lingering over if you choose to eat there. The return to Beirut takes the coastal drive and arrives back at your hotel around 5:00–6:00 PM.

Top questions
What languages is the tour guided in?
Live guide in English and Arabic.
What is Baatara Gorge and why is it so dramatic?
Baatara Gorge is a 255-metre waterfall that drops through three successive natural limestone bridges: a geological phenomenon found nowhere else on earth. The waterfall disappears into the darkness of the gorge below, and the walk down to the viewpoint puts you close enough to feel the spray and hear the roar. In spring the volume of water is staggering. Even in summer the site is dramatic.
How high are the Aaqoura Lakes and what is the landscape like?
Aaqoura's lakes sit at over 1,500 metres above sea level, framed by cedar-forested ridges and mountain panoramas that stretch across the northern Lebanese highlands. A lakeshore trail lets you walk the shoreline and take in the reflections in a quiet, off-the-map setting that most Lebanon visitors never find.
What can I do in Batroun and how old is the sea wall?
Batroun is one of the oldest Phoenician cities in the world and today one of Lebanon's most laid-back coastal towns. You can walk along the ancient Phoenician sea wall, a 3,000-year-old natural rock barrier still standing on the beach, explore the old town's stone streets and Ottoman houses, and eat fresh seafood at waterfront restaurants. Batroun is also known for Lebanon's craft beer scene.
What time does the tour depart and return?
The tour departs at 9:00 AM from your Beirut hotel and returns around 5:00–6:00 PM, covering eight hours total. Hotel pickup and drop-off are included.
