The experience
Over two days, you'll cross some of the region's most dramatic terrain in a private 4WD: a Lexus 470, Land Cruiser 100 or 200, or Land Cruiser Prado. The first day is a series of mountain passes: Chyiyrchyk Pass opens onto views of the Alay Mountains; Gejige village sits in a colorful geopark zone; Taldyk Pass rises to 3,400 meters with snow-capped peaks; Sary-Tash village marks the junction where the road splits toward Tajikistan and China, with both the Pamir and Alay ranges visible from that point. Sary-Mogol, the most tourist-friendly settlement in the valley, is where you can meet local people and stop at the village shop before the final drive to Tulpar Lake.
You'll spend the night in a yurt at the lake's edge, with dinner included and time to walk the shoreline and take in views of the Pamir Mountains. The second morning, after breakfast, the hike to Lenin Peak's base camp begins, typically 3–5 hours depending on how high you climb. Along the way you may spot red marmots and alpine flowers like edelweiss. The Onion Field, at 4,200 meters, holds memorial plaques for alpinists. If you're comfortable at altitude, you can push on to Travellers' Pass at 4,800 meters. By noon you're back at the yurt for lunch, then the drive returns you to Osh before evening.
Your guide speaks English or Russian and knows the region well. The operator provides 4WD vehicles suited to the high passes and rough terrain, and can arrange specialized infant seats if needed. Accommodation preferences can be noted in advance.
