Sunset Mangrove Canoe Tour in Kenya: Paddle Mida Creek
Wade the mudflats, then paddle where the birds gather
A two-hour guided canoe tour of Mida Creek in Kenya starts on the exposed sea bed at low tide, where thousands of crabs scatter underfoot, then moves to a traditional canoe to explore mangrove channels at sunset. The tour includes a professional guide, hotel pickup, and a coconut or palm wine refreshment in Giriama village afterward. Choose low tide for a longer walk across the mudflats and their wildlife, or high tide for less walking before paddling.

The experience
The tour begins on foot across the mudflats that emerge when the tide drops, a landscape where crabs and starfish scatter as you walk toward the water. Once you reach deeper water, you board a traditional canoe and paddle as local fishermen do through the shallow channels of Mida Creek, a UNESCO-designated Bird International Zone and Africa's second-largest ornithological reserve. The creek's warm, shallow waters and mangrove roots are home to 65 bird species (storks, herons, pink flamingos, kingfishers, eagles and sacred ibis), and to mudskippers and frogfish that move between water and mud.
The route takes you deep into the mangrove forest, where oysters cling to the submerged root systems and the water opens into a labyrinth of islets and waterways. The timing is built around the sunset: as the sky shifts to pastel colors and light catches every ripple, you paddle back toward Green Island and then return to Giriama village. There a guide offers you a freshly picked coconut or a glass of palm wine to drink before heading back.
When you book, you choose whether to go at low tide (a longer walk across the sea bed with more time to observe the mudflat creatures and their distinctive habitat), or at high tide, which means less walking and a quicker entry to the canoe. If you don't specify, the tour runs around 4:00 PM to catch the sunset regardless of the tide.
