experience

What’s the experience like?

The city wakes up early here. By 6:30am, we were already weaving through Nairobi’s quieter streets, our guide Joseph pointing out the way the sun hits the city skyline just before you reach the park gates. The air felt cool—almost chilly for Nairobi—and there was this faint scent of dew mixed with red dust as we rolled down the windows. Nairobi National Park is wild but right on the city’s edge; you can spot giraffes grazing with office buildings in the background. We saw a herd of zebras crossing right in front of us, and a pair of rhinos off near some acacia trees. Joseph knew exactly where to stop for lion tracks—he even showed us how to spot them in the soft earth. Bird lovers would be in heaven here; I counted at least five different calls before breakfast, including that sharp cry from a crowned crane. If you’re lucky, you’ll catch sight of a secretary bird strutting through the grass.

After a few hours on safari, we headed over to Karen Blixen’s old house. The place feels frozen in time—her writing desk still faces the garden, and you can almost hear her stories echoing off the old wooden floors. Our museum guide told us about her life here and pointed out tiny details from “Out of Africa” that I’d never noticed before. There’s a small café next door where we grabbed Kenyan coffee; it’s strong and earthy, perfect after a morning outside.

Later on, we stopped by Bomas of Kenya in Langata. It’s lively—music everywhere and dancers in bright costumes spinning around visitors. They invite you up if you’re brave enough (I tried…not my best move). You get to see traditional homesteads too; each one built differently depending on the tribe. The Maasai Market nearby buzzes with vendors selling beadwork and fabrics—you’ll want to bring cash for souvenirs. If you want to visit the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust elephant nursery at 11am (it gets booked fast), let your guide know ahead of time—they only let in 200 people per day.
