The experience
The tour picks you up from your Nairobi hotel at 8:00 AM and heads to the Nairobi National Museum on Museum Hill, a five-minute drive from the city centre. You'll spend an hour with a guide walking through four themed sections (culture, nature, history and contemporary art) that cover Kenyan paleontology, regional wildlife and the country's diverse heritage. The museum sits on a route many travelers take between the airport and other parts of Kenya, so it works as a capstone to a safari or a standalone introduction to the region.
Next is the Giraffe Centre, where you feed Rothschild's giraffes by hand under the supervision of keepers. The centre has rescued and hand-reared around 500 orphaned giraffes since 1979, and the animals live in a semi-wild state on the grounds. A keeper will teach you about their behaviors, physiology and habitat while you're standing close enough to offer food directly to them: the kind of direct contact most wildlife encounters don't allow.
After lunch (at your own expense at a nearby restaurant), you move to Bomas for the tribal cultural dances. The shows run daily from 2:30 PM to 4:00 PM on weekdays and 3:30 PM to 4:30 PM on weekends, with performers displaying music, dance, drama, fashion and poetry from Kenya's numerous tribes. The tour ends with a return to your hotel.
