The Experience

You pick your route before you start. Along the Coast runs about 40 km through Mtwapa and traditional villages in palm-tree and mango forests, with roughly a third of the ride hugging the Indian Ocean—mostly flat, difficulty 1. Three Coastal Areas compresses three climate zones into 24 km: beach, palm forest, then semiarid terrain with two steep climbs and a view over the North Coast. Along the Creek follows the Mtwapa inland for 31 km through Giriama settlements and farms called shamba, with creek views and almost untouched bush. The Bike Adventure is the hardest: 24 km with about 8 km of single trail, hilltop climbs crossing creek arms, and a high vantage over the North Coast—difficulty 3 to 4.

The bikes are mountain bikes with front shocks, and you get a helmet and gloves. Routes run on unpaved roads and paths with no traffic. A typical day covers 23 to 31 km and takes 2½ to 3½ hours of riding, though the longer routes can stretch to 4 or 5 hours. You stop once at a local place for refreshment—bottled water, bananas and a soda are included. At least two local guides ride with your group and speak English and German; they know the terrain and can point out shortcuts if the pace needs to ease.

The operator runs year-round in all weather, so bring a T-shirt and trousers, solid shoes, sun protection and a head scarf to wear under the helmet. Africa begins right behind the hotel area—the rides start from settlements and forests close enough that you don't need a long transfer to reach them.
