The experience

The tour runs two hours on foot through the heritage zone of Lamu Old Town. Your guide is a Lamu resident and will walk you past the major museums, Lamu Fort, the old mosque, centuries-old houses, and the carved wooden doors that come from different origins and periods. Along the way you'll see dhows in action on the water and donkeys on their daily routes through the streets: the working life of the island that most visitors miss. If the timing works, the tour can end at sunset.

Museum and fort entry fees are included in the tour price. The route stays within the heritage site zone, so you're walking through the protected area where Swahili culture and Islamic tradition have shaped the architecture and daily rhythm for centuries. Your guide will explain what you're seeing as you move through it, grounding the history in the lives of the people who live there now.

Pickup is arranged for you, and the tour works for all fitness levels. Children from age one travel free when sitting with an adult, and specialized infant seats are available if you need one. Public transportation options are also nearby if you prefer to make your own way to the starting point.
