The experience

Hell's Gate sets itself apart as Kenya's only national park where visitors can bike and walk freely among the animals. After pickup from your Nairobi hotel, the drive takes you through the Great Rift Valley escarpment with stops at viewpoints before you arrive mid-morning at the park gate. From there, you choose: bike through the park on your own pace or drive if you prefer. Most travelers bike, pedaling past Bushbucks, Dikdiks, Giraffes, Gazelles, Gnus, Hartebeests, Impalas, Klipspringers, Buffaloes, Hyraxes, Zebras, Hyenas, Jackals, Mongooses, Baboons, Monkeys and Porcupines. The park's gorges and cliff formations frame the ride, and your guide points out the rare lammergeyer vultures the park has historically sheltered.

After biking, you transition to a guided hike for a closer look at the flora, fauna, geology and the region's history. Lunch is available for purchase at the park. At 2pm, you board a one-hour boat on Lake Naivasha, where hippos, buffalo, fish eagles and pelicans move through the water around you. The return drive to Nairobi takes the afternoon, arriving around 6pm.

Is this one for you?You bike and hike on your own, with a guide leading and explaining the landscape and wildlife, not a passive drive-through. This suits travelers who want to move through the park actively and get closer to the animals than a vehicle allows, and who don't mind a full day of travel time to and from Nairobi.

Top questions

Can children come?

Yes. Ticket types: Child (3 to 9 years); Infant (under 3): free.

What animals will I see on the bike ride through Hell's Gate?

Hell's Gate is home to Zebras, Giraffes, Gazelles, Buffaloes, Impalas, Hyenas, Jackals, Baboons, Monkeys and many other species. The park also shelters rare lammergeyer vultures. Because you're biking and hiking at ground level rather than driving, the encounters feel more immediate than in other parks.

Do I have to bike, or can I drive through Hell's Gate instead?

Biking is the main way to explore, but driving is also allowed if you prefer. Most travelers bike because it's the experience Hell's Gate is known for: the only Kenyan park where you can move freely on two wheels among the wildlife.

What happens at Lake Naivasha?

Lake Naivasha is a one-hour guided boat ride at 2pm, included in the tour price. You'll see hippos, buffalo, fish eagles, pelicans and other water birds from the boat before heading back to Nairobi.

Is lunch included in the tour price?

Lunch is available for purchase at the park around 1pm. It is not included in the tour fee. Water is provided.

How much time do I spend actually biking and hiking versus traveling?

The tour is eight hours total. Several hours are allocated to driving from Nairobi to Hell's Gate and back, plus the one-hour boat ride. The remaining time is split between the bike ride, the guided hike and stops at viewpoints inside the park.
