The Experience
“Don’t look the buffalo in the eye,” our guide David joked as we wobbled past a herd — I think he was half-serious, but it made us all laugh and loosen up. Hell’s Gate National Park is only about two hours from Nairobi, but it felt like another planet: red cliffs, giraffes just… standing there, chewing, watching us pedal by. The air had this dry, mineral smell — not unpleasant, just different from city air. My legs were already complaining before we even reached the first little gorge (I’m not exactly Tour de France material), but David kept an easy pace and pointed out impalas darting between acacias. He knew every shortcut and stopped for every question — even the silly ones.
I didn’t expect to get so close to the animals. There’s no fence between you and them on this biking safari in Hell’s Gate; at one point a zebra crossed right in front of me and I almost forgot to brake. The sun was sharp but not unbearable — bring water though, seriously. We took a break near some rocks where you could hear birds arguing overhead (or maybe flirting? hard to tell). David told us stories about Maasai herders who still live nearby; he waved at a couple of kids who waved back shyly. It felt good to be moving under my own steam instead of stuck in a van.
The last stretch was mostly downhill (thank god), wind in my face and dust everywhere — I probably looked ridiculous but didn’t care anymore. We finished with tired legs and dusty smiles, piling into the van for the ride back. I still think about that moment when everything went quiet except for the crunch of tires on gravel and some distant animal calls — kind of peaceful in its own wild way.
