The Experience

Hands wrapped tight around the handlebars, I squinted into the morning sun as we coasted down into Hell’s Gate. Our guide, Peter, had this way of pointing out animals before anyone else spotted them—he’d just nod his chin and suddenly there’d be a zebra right by the path. We’d stopped at a viewpoint earlier, wind tugging at my shirt while everyone tried to get that one photo of the Rift Valley (none of mine do it justice). The air smelled a bit dusty but sweet, like warm grass and something floral—Peter said it was the rose farms nearby. Didn’t expect that.

The biking part felt less like a safari and more like stumbling into someone else’s world. Giraffes chewing in slow motion, gazelles flicking their tails at us, nobody really bothered by our little group pedaling through. There was this moment when a warthog darted across and I nearly lost my balance—my friend laughed so hard she almost dropped her camera. The gorge looked dramatic in that late morning light; red cliffs with shadows crawling down them. I kept thinking how odd it was to be out of the car in an African park. Kind of freeing.

Later, drifting out onto Lake Naivasha in a small boat, everything went quiet except for birds—so many calls layered over each other—and the slap of water against the hull. Hippos surfaced now and then with these snorts that made me jump every time (I pretended not to flinch). Our captain pointed out a fish eagle perched above us—he whistled and it actually answered back, which felt like some secret between them. Sun on my arms, breeze off the water… I still think about that feeling when I’m stuck in traffic back home.
