The experience
What makes this evening different is the place itself: the Treehouse at Kwa Mara is built around a baobab tree in one of Kilifi's few spots where bushbabies visit reliably most nights. You arrive around 5:45 pm for a sundowner on the platform with a creek view as the light goes, then move to the dinner table. The three courses come from Baraka, one of Kilifi's top chefs: samosas with kachumbari, pan-fried red snapper with butternut squash and coconut rice, and a lime and biscuit pie made with local fruit and spices. Between each course, Mara draws a story from Kenya's rich mythology, folklore or history, and because the stories are chosen on the evening itself, each dinner has its own shape and energy.
Around 6:30 pm, the bushbabies usually arrive at the treehouse. You hand-feed them directly. They are small, accustomed to visitors, and the moment is unhurried. After dinner finishes around 8:30 pm, you can arrange transport home or onward to wherever else you want the night to go. High tide sometimes brings the chance to swim in the creek, which the operator describes as Kenya's cleanest and most beautiful.
