The Experience

A Land Cruiser pulls away from your hotel before dawn on day one, heading southeast toward Tsavo East National Park along the Nairobi–Mombasa road. By mid-morning you're checking into your lodge, and at 2pm the first game drive begins—four hours searching the open plains for elephant, lion, buffalo, cheetah and giraffe. The route takes you to Aruba Dam, where animals cluster during the dry season. It's the kind of pacing that lets you actually see what's there instead of rushing between stops.

Day two moves you west. You're up at 5am for a two-hour game drive out of Tsavo East, then a full drive across to Tsavo West, arriving in the afternoon. After lunch and a rest, another game drive at 2pm includes the rhino sanctuary before dark. The next morning—6am breakfast, 7am departure—you'll visit Mzima Springs, where crystal-clear water holds hippo, crocodile and fish you can actually see. Then it's the long drive to Amboseli, checking in by late afternoon. Your 4pm game drive there is the first time Mount Kilimanjaro comes into view, snow-capped and massive, while you're watching elephant herds move across the grassland below it.

The final morning at Amboseli runs from 7am to 11am—a three-hour safari before the drive back to Nairobi. Your driver-guide has been the same person all four days, which means by the end he knows what you want to see and where the animals have been moving. The whole thing is private, so the pace is yours, the stops are yours, and you're not sharing the vehicle with strangers or waiting for a group to finish their photos.
