The experience

You leave Nairobi at 7 am and drive four hours to Amboseli, spotting wildlife on the way. The first day ends with an evening game drive before dinner and overnight at one of the lodges: AA lodges, Sentrim, Kilima or Kibo safari camps. The pace is built around the animals: early breakfast, then a game drive until 9 am when the heat drives them to shade, a midday break at the lodge, and another drive in the evening when they move again.

Day two takes you from Amboseli to Tsavo West, where you walk the Mzima springs and see the Shetani lava formations: two stops most safari itineraries skip. Lunch is a picnic in the park. You check in at Taita Hills, Saltlick, Nguli or Ziwani by mid-afternoon and have time for an evening game drive. Day three stays in Tsavo West with morning and evening drives. Day four is another early drive before the journey back to Nairobi or onward to Mombasa if you're extending your trip.

The minivan or Jeep seats your group only, and the guide speaks English, Spanish, Italian, French or one of two other languages. All lodges are wheelchair accessible, and the vehicle can accommodate wheelchairs and infant seats.
