The experience
You're staying at the Dead Sea and don't want to backtrack to Amman to reach Petra. This tour picks you up from your hotel and takes you straight there: a 2.5-hour drive through changing landscape. Only your group travels in the car, which has air-conditioning, Wi-Fi and bottled water. An English-speaking driver handles the route while you set the pace once you arrive.
At Petra, you walk through the narrow Siq canyon, a slot carved into rose-colored rock, and emerge at the Treasury (Al-Khazneh), the carved facade most people come to see. From there, the route continues past the Street of Facades, where dozens of tombs line the cliff face, then the Royal Tombs and the theatre. If you have the energy and the daylight, about 800 steps lead up to the Monastery (Ad-Deir), a larger carved structure set higher in the rock. Your driver stays at the visitor center. You move through the site on foot, stopping where you want and moving on when you're ready. The return journey reaches your hotel in the evening.
Petra entrance tickets are not included in the price: buy them at the gate when you arrive, or use a Jordan Pass if you have one. Bring comfortable walking shoes and sun protection. The site is mostly exposed rock and open ground.
