The Experience

I’ll admit, I was a little nervous about getting around Jordan — I’d heard stories about wild traffic and, honestly, my Arabic is pretty much limited to “shukran.” But when our driver pulled up outside our Amman hotel in this spotless full-size sedan (felt almost too nice for my dusty backpack), he just grinned and waved us over like we were old friends. We set off toward Petra, and I kept expecting some awkward silence or forced small talk, but instead our driver, Samir, pointed out little things along the road — a bakery where he gets his favorite bread, the spot where his kids learned to ride bikes. He handed back chilled bottled water without even asking (I’d forgotten how thirsty you get just sitting in that sun). The Wi-Fi actually worked better than most hotels we’d stayed at so far, so my partner spent half the drive uploading photos while I just watched the desert roll by. There’s something calming about not having to think about directions or bus schedules for once.

At one point we hit a traffic jam near Madaba — goats crossing, of all things — and Samir just laughed and shrugged: “Jordan time,” he said. It made me relax a bit; there’s no rush here. I still think about that quiet stretch of highway outside Kerak Castle where everything went silent except for the wind through the open window. Not sure why that stuck with me.
