The experience

You arrive at Tokyo Maikoya in Asakusa and spend the first part of the session making wagashi: the delicate sweets traditionally served with matcha. The host walks you through the ingredients and techniques, and you prepare the sweets with the utensils provided. This hands-on work is the foundation for what comes next: you'll wear a kimono, then move into the tearoom to learn proper tea ceremony etiquette and its cultural meaning before preparing and drinking matcha green tea together.

The experience holds a maximum of ten participants, which keeps the tearoom calm and gives the host time to work with each person. You'll have guided opportunities to photograph yourself in the kimono during the session, though tripods aren't allowed and the tea master may limit photography during parts of the ceremony itself. The whole class runs two hours in a serene, historic setting.

Public transportation stops nearby, so you don't need a car or hotel pickup to reach Tokyo Maikoya. Green tea and water are included, as are all the ingredients and tools for making the sweets.
