The experience
You start by browsing a selection of vintage coins (Japanese pieces, rare international finds, and everyday circulation coins), and pick the one whose design or age appeals to you. From there, you move to the workbench with real jewelry-making tools: hammer, anvil, files, and sizing equipment. Your instructor walks you through each stage: shaping the coin, forming the ring, sizing it to fit, and finishing the edges. The whole process takes about an hour, and no experience is required.
What makes this different from buying a souvenir is that you're the one doing the work. You feel the resistance of the metal, make the marks that will stay on the finished piece, and decide when it's right. Every coin carries its own history and design, so the ring you leave with is genuinely one-of-a-kind: shaped by the coin itself and by the choices you made at the bench. Optional customization and rare coin upgrades let you push the piece further if you want.
The workshop sits in Kyoto, accessible without a car. If you're staying in the city or passing through between temples, it fills a few hours with something you can hold onto. You walk out wearing what you made.
