The Experience

We stopped every few minutes because there was always some odd detail: a bar sign written in crooked English, a cat darting between stools, someone in full cosplay (I tried to say “kawaii” and probably butchered it — Li laughed). Kai had this way of making you feel at ease in front of the camera, even if you’re usually awkward like me. He’d suggest little things (“try leaning against that wall,” or “look up at those wires”) but nothing felt forced. At one point he told us about the post-war history here — how these bars started as black market stalls. You could almost feel it in the wood panels and faded posters.

The whole thing felt more like hanging out than posing for photos. We ducked into a tiny bar for a quick drink (not included but honestly worth it), and the bartender nodded like he’d seen a hundred groups like ours before.
