Summary

Learn pure gold kintsugi in tokyo’s omotesando studio

You’ll step into Master Taku’s peaceful Tokyo studio and learn kintsugi—the art of repairing pottery with pure gold—from an award-winning ceramist. Guided by his gentle humor, you’ll restore your own plate using real urushi lacquer and bring home your creation that same day. Expect laughter, quiet focus, and a new way of seeing beauty in imperfection.

experience

What’s the experience like?

The first thing I noticed was how quiet Master Taku’s studio felt—like the city outside had faded away as soon as we stepped inside. There was a faint smell, earthy and sharp, from the lacquer he’d prepared. I was nervous about messing up the plate he handed me (he makes them himself, by the way), but he just smiled and said, “Imperfection is part of it.” I didn’t expect to laugh so much—especially when my fingers got sticky with lacquer and I tried to pronounce “urushi.” Li laughed too; I probably butchered it.

We sat around a low table, everyone hunched over their own cracked pottery. The gold powder shimmered in the afternoon light—Tokyo light is different, softer somehow—and Master Taku showed us how to brush it along the break like you’re highlighting a scar instead of hiding it. He told us about wabi-sabi and how cracks aren’t mistakes but stories. It’s funny, but watching him work made me slow down without even thinking about it. The process is careful but not fussy—just enough time for your mind to wander.

I picked the black & gold option because it looked bold, but honestly? Every piece ended up feeling personal by the end. When we finished, there was this hush before anyone said anything—everyone just looking at their plates like they were seeing something new. You can take your repaired plate home that day (which still feels wild to me). I keep mine on my desk now. Sometimes when things feel messy or off, I look at that gold line and remember what he said: “Even more beautiful than before it broke.”
