The Experience

You walk in, choose from eight anime characters—Goku, Luffy, the Forth Hokage, Rei or Asuka from Evangelion, Nezuko, Sailor Moon, or Hatsune Miku—and the makeup artists get to work. The 120 minutes includes the full transformation: hairstyle, makeup, costume fitting, and a wig that actually looks like the character. It's not a quick touch-up; they're building the look from the ground up so you step out looking like you walked out of the anime itself.

Once you're done, you've got options. Hang out at Shinjuku Yale with food and drinks in full cosplay, take photos there, or if you're up for it, walk around Kabukicho in the costume and shoot pictures on the street. The neighborhood is used to it—Kabukicho is where anime culture lives in Tokyo, so you'll fit right in. If you want to go outside in the costume, there's a ¥5,000 deposit that gets refunded when you return everything and it's checked over. You handle removing your own makeup at the end, and you've got to bring your own undergarments—camisoles, tank tops, short spats—so the costume sits right.

One thing to know: the staff might use a translation device if English isn't their strong suit, but they know what they're doing with the makeup and costume. If your size doesn't match what they have, they'll still do the hair and makeup, just skip the costume part. Minors need an adult there the whole time. Book ahead and tell them which character you want—some might not be available while others are being adjusted, so confirming early keeps your pick locked in.
