The experience
Arimatsu sits on the Tokai-do, the main road that connected Tokyo and Kyoto for a thousand years. The town is only 1 kilometer long, so the walk is unhurried. You'll pass traditional wooden houses and enter one to see how people lived in that era. The street itself is the draw: most of it has stayed intact while the rest of Japan rebuilt.
The tie-dye part happens in a working studio where local women still practice the craft. You'll watch them demonstrate the actual technique, then tie a handkerchief with thread the way they do. It's not difficult, just a matter of folding and knotting as you like. A professional dyer handles the indigo bath, and when the thread comes off, the pattern emerges. You take the finished handkerchief with you. The museum nearby holds festival cars that otherwise only appear once a year on the street.
