The experience
You arrive at Nagoya Castle through the East Gate and spend the first part of the tour inside the grounds with your guide, who walks you through the stone walls, the Ninomaru Garden, and the reconstructed Honmaru Palace with its sliding screen paintings. The main keep is a climb, but from the top you see across Nagoya city while learning how the Tokugawa clan built and held the castle. The guide explains the samurai culture and Edo-era construction as you move through each section, so the history of the place becomes the reason for each stop.
After the castle, you walk to Kinshachi Yokocho, a traditional-style street near the grounds lined with small shops and food stalls. Your guide introduces you to Nagoya's local specialties as you taste dishes and browse the area. This is not a sit-down meal. You move through the street with the guide pointing out what makes each dish local to the region, and you choose what to try. The whole experience is built around the idea that samurai history and everyday food culture are both part of what Nagoya is.

Is this one for you?Choose the Nagoya Port start if you are arriving by ship or staying nearby. The castle start works better if you are already in central Nagoya and want to begin at the grounds themselves. Either way, the 2.5-hour length fits a morning or afternoon without eating into the rest of your day.
