Tea Ceremony in Osaka: Learn Matcha-Making at Sheraton Miyako
A certified tea master teaches you matcha in a traditional tea room, then you brew your own.
A tea ceremony class at Sheraton Miyako Hotel Osaka where you wear a rental kimono, learn the culture and etiquette from a certified instructor, watch matcha preparation, and make tea yourself. The experience includes matcha and Japanese sweets, with time to photograph the setting and practice what you've learned.
The experience
The tea room sits on the 4th floor of Sheraton Miyako Hotel Osaka in a traditional setting where you'll be seated on tatami (or a chair if you prefer, with cushions provided). A certified tea ceremony master leads the class in English, starting with the history and culture behind the ritual. You'll wear a rental kimono that slips over your clothes, no complicated wrapping required, and the instructor shows you how to put it on. The whole experience runs about an hour and fifteen minutes.
You watch the master prepare matcha, the powdered green tea central to the ceremony, then make your own bowl and drink it. Two servings of matcha come with two Japanese sweets, and you have time to take photos in the kimono before or after. If you have a wheat allergy, the sweets can be swapped for fruit. Children under ten can request decaffeinated matcha milk instead. The point is not just tasting tea but learning how to enjoy it at home once you leave.
