Three Japanese traditions in one private afternoon, with everything you need to dress, make and take home.

A private three-hour activity in central Osaka where you wear a full kimono, perform a traditional tea ceremony with matcha and sweets, and create your own calligraphy to keep. The experience is designed for beginners, with English-speaking guidance throughout and a climate-controlled indoor setting so weather never interrupts your day.

The experience

You arrive at Sazanka in central Osaka and step into a serene, climate-controlled space built for this single afternoon. A staff member dresses you in a full kimono (obi, accessories and all), then walks you through each of the three practices. There's no lecture. You're doing the work. You'll learn the precise movements of the tea ceremony, whisking matcha and tasting the sweets that accompany it. You'll hold a brush and make calligraphy on paper, guided by someone who speaks English and knows how to pace instruction for someone encountering these traditions for the first time.

The kimono stays on through all three activities, so you can photograph yourself in it: many travelers use these shots as their favorite memory of the trip. When you leave, you take your calligraphy with you, a tangible piece of what you made. The whole sequence runs three hours, which is long enough to move slowly through each practice without feeling rushed, but short enough to fit into a free afternoon or a gap in your itinerary.

What’s included

  • Full kimono rental with obi and accessories.
  • private kimono dressing service.
  • calligraphy tools, paper and instruction.
  • Japanese tea ceremony experience with matcha and sweets.
  • English-speaking guidance throughout the three-hour session.
