Tea Ceremony and Matsue Castle Tour: Local Guide
Climb the castle keep, then kneel for tea in a garden built by a lord.
A 2.5-hour guided tour of Matsue Castle and Meimei-an Teahouse combines the castle's steep interior and 400-year architecture with a hands-on tea ceremony in a serene garden. Groups stay small (2–6 people), and a local guide leads in Japanese. English and French audio guides cover the castle. The tour meets at Matsue New Urban Hotel at 2pm and ends at the teahouse or hotel by 4:30pm. Children aged 6 and above are welcome. Steep stairs mean you can wait at the castle base if preferred.

The experience
The castle itself anchors the afternoon. You'll enter through the Otemon Gate, then climb to the keep: a 400-year-old structure with steep interior stairs that reveal the building's hidden origins and architecture. If the stairs don't appeal, you can stay at the base while others ascend. A local guide walks you through the site and its stories. If you prefer, English or French audio guides are available for the castle portion instead.
After the castle, you move to Meimei-an Teahouse, where you perform a traditional tea ceremony in a garden designed by the castle's seventh lord. This is not a demonstration. You'll kneel, prepare and drink matcha tea yourself while overlooking the garden. You'll need to remove your shoes to enter. The whole experience runs about two and a half hours from start to dispersal, and the tour operates even in light rain.
