Step-by-step itinerary
Matsue Castle tour and indigo dyeing

- Explore Matsue Castle Keep
- Visit indigo dye artisan studio
- Hands-on natural indigo dyeing experience
- Disperse at the site
The experience
You start at the lobby of Matsue New Urban Hotel at 9am and walk to Matsue Castle's Otemon Gate, where a local guide walks you through the keep: one of only twelve original castle structures left in Japan. The guide shares the castle's 400-year history and the lesser-known origins of the site, pointing out details in the architecture most visitors miss. By 10:30 you're at the indigo dye studio along the moat canal, where a certified traditional artisan is waiting.
The hands-on work is the core of the class. You interact directly with the artisan and dye a small cotton scarf or towel using natural indigo, creating a piece that is entirely your own. The artisan demonstrates the technique, then guides you through the process (the immersion, the folding, the timing), so you understand how the color develops and why each piece comes out different. This is not a demonstration you watch. You're working alongside someone who has spent years perfecting the craft.
The whole experience runs from 9am to 11:20am, ending at the studio. The guide speaks Japanese, and audio support is available if you need it. The fee covers the guide, insurance, castle admission, and the dyeing materials. You take home the scarf or towel you made. Nearby public transportation can get you back into the city afterward.
