Takayama Traditional Japanese Tea Ceremony Private Experience
Sit in a 200-year-old machiya and learn tea the way it was meant to be served
A traditional Japanese tea ceremony held in a private machiya (a restored Edo-period merchant house in Takayama), where you'll spend two hours with a live English-speaking guide learning the practice while enjoying seasonal sweets and tea. The house itself, formerly a clinic grafted onto the original structure, shows both the rigid format of machiya architecture and how each builder pursued beauty within it. You'll see that contrast firsthand as you sit.

The experience
Machiya refers to the merchant houses built during Japan's Edo period, and this one has survived intact for over 200 years. The narrow entrance opens into a long, deep interior (a shape that seems impossible from the street) built by Hida craftsmen using the best materials they could source. The house you'll enter was originally run as an obstetrics and gynecology clinic, and that addition created an unusual combination: the original merchant structure and the clinic wing exist side by side, their strange harmony still visible in the layout and design. Your guide will walk you through how machiya architecture follows a strict format, yet each house pursued beauty differently within those constraints.
The tea ceremony itself unfolds over two hours in the private tea room. You'll learn the practice from a live guide who speaks English, moving through the ritual at a pace that lets you absorb both the technique and the philosophy behind it. Seasonal fruits and sweets arrive with the tea, chosen to match the time of year. The experience is designed to let you sit and reminisce about life in an earlier time, using the house itself (its materials, its proportions, its survival) as part of what you're learning.

Top questions
Can children come?
Yes. Ticket types: Child (6 to 17 years); Infant (under 6): free.
What exactly is a machiya, and why does this one matter?
Machiya are merchant houses from the Edo period, characterized by their long, narrow shape hidden behind a modest entrance. This machiya has remained intact for over 200 years, still showing the craftsmanship of the Hida builders who constructed it and the beauty each owner pursued within the traditional format. The addition of a former clinic wing makes this particular house architecturally unusual and worth studying.
Will I actually learn how to perform the tea ceremony, or just watch?
You'll learn the tea ceremony itself during the two hours, guided step-by-step by a live English-speaking instructor. The pace is set so you can absorb the technique and the meaning behind each movement, not rush through it.
What's included with the tea ceremony?
Seasonal fruits, sweets and tea are included. The sweets and fruit are chosen to match the season, and they're served as part of the ceremony itself.
Is the machiya accessible if I have mobility concerns?
The house is wheelchair accessible. Infants and small children can be brought in a pram or stroller, and service animals are allowed.
