Step-by-step itinerary
Explore Shinjuku Golden Gai bars
- Visit Memories Passage alleyway
- Bar hop through wooden row houses
- Enjoy drinks at unique bars
The experience
Shinjuku Golden Gai is built into an area of roughly 6,500 square meters: each bar occupies about 14 square meters, crammed into wooden row houses that survived World War II. The alleyways are 2 to 3 meters wide. Walking through Memories Passage, one of the oldest stretches, you see the physical history of the district compressed into 50 to 60 meters. An English-speaking guide who knows Golden Gai leads you through several of these bars, each one shaped entirely by its owner's taste and mood. The narrow entrances open onto dense, bewitching interiors where regulars and first-timers sit shoulder to shoulder.
Bar hopping here is called "Hashigo-zake": the standard way to experience Golden Gai. Your guide handles the introductions and picks which bars to enter. You get your first drink at each stop included. After that, you order and pay as you go. The guide stays with the group, moving you through the night at a pace that lets the atmosphere sink in rather than rushing through a checklist. If you order more than one additional drink at any bar, cash payment is expected at the counter.
The experience lasts roughly two hours. You'll need to be at least 20 years old to participate. Public transportation runs nearby if you're staying elsewhere in Shinjuku or across Tokyo and want to meet the guide at the entrance to Golden Gai.

Top questions
What is Shinjuku Golden Gai actually like when you walk into it?
Shinjuku Golden Gai is a warren of wooden buildings from the postwar era packed with nearly 300 bars and restaurants in an area smaller than a city block. Each bar is tiny, about 14 square meters, with a narrow entrance that opens onto a dense, intimate space shaped by the owner's personality. Memories Passage, one of the oldest alleyways, stretches only 50 to 60 meters but holds decades of Tokyo's nightlife history in its wooden walls.
Do I have to drink alcohol at every bar, or can I order something else?
Your first drink at each bar is included in the experience, but what you order is up to you. After the first drink, you order and pay separately at the counter. If you order more than one additional drink at a bar, cash payment is required.
How many bars does the guide take you to in one night?
The guide takes you to several recommended bars across the roughly two-hour experience, choosing which ones based on the night and the group's vibe. The guide knows Golden Gai well and picks bars that show different sides of the district rather than hitting a fixed number of stops.
Can I get to Shinjuku Golden Gai without a car?
Yes. Public transportation options are available near Golden Gai, and you can meet the guide at the entrance to the alleyway. If you're staying in another part of Shinjuku or elsewhere in Tokyo, you can take the train or bus to the area and meet the group there.
What language does the guide speak?
The guide speaks English and is familiar with Golden Gai's bars and history. They handle introductions at each stop and lead the group through the night.
