The experience
Kintsugi is the Japanese art of repairing broken pottery with gold, a practice rooted in the samurai era that turns damage into beauty. In this Shinjuku workshop, you select your own plate from a variety on hand, then work through the repair process yourself with guidance from English-speaking staff. You apply gold powder to the cracks however you like, creating a design that is entirely yours. The whole class takes about an hour, and you walk out with the restored plate as a one-of-a-kind souvenir.
The workshop sits in Shinjuku with views of the neighborhood, and the space also displays other traditional Japanese crafts (chopstick making and calligraphy among them), so there is something to browse while you work or afterward. Beginners and families are welcome. No prior experience is needed. If you want a larger or higher-quality plate to work with, a premium upgrade is available at checkout.
