Taste your way through Shinjuku's hidden food stops and Kabukicho's neon history

A three-hour food tour of Shinjuku with stops at three restaurants serving sushi, tonkatsu and Okinawan dishes, plus three drinks and snacks, led by a guide in English or Spanish. The route moves through post-war Shinjuku into Kabukicho, Tokyo's nightlife district, ending at Shinjuku Station. Alcoholic drinks are served only to travelers 20 and older. Younger travelers receive non-alcoholic alternatives. The tour is not suitable for celiac or vegan diets.

The experience

You'll start in Shinjuku and move backward through time, learning how the neighborhood rebuilt itself from the post-war era into the commercial center it is now. The guide walks you through the chaos and energy of the district before cutting into Kabukicho, where you'll hear the history of a development project that never happened and how Tokyo's underground shaped what the area became. This is the setup for the eating: three distinct stops, each one a different cuisine, each one a reason the guide picked it.

The first stop lands on sushi and sashimi: vinegared rice paired with fresh fish, or the fish alone. One drink comes with it. From there, a quick snack of tonkatsu, a crispy pork cutlet with house-made teriyaki sauce, a dish the Portuguese brought to Japan during the Meiji period and it stuck. Then the route shifts south: Okinawan cuisine, which blends island flavors with pork, tofu and seaweed into hearty, healthy dishes shaped by tropical history. Two drinks come with this stop. You'll finish with Okinawan fruit ice cream before the guide leaves you at Shinjuku Station, where the buskers, billboards and the famous 3D cat are waiting.

The tour runs three hours. A guide leads in English on most days, or in Spanish on Wednesdays. Travelers 20 and older receive alcoholic drinks at each stop. Younger travelers get non-alcoholic alternatives instead. The tour is not designed for celiac or vegan diets, so check the menu details before booking if either applies to you.
