The experience
Otaru became a tourist destination because of Japanese films, and the reason is visible the moment you arrive: the canal runs 1,140 meters through the center of town, lined with 63 gas lamps and stone warehouses that now hold shops and restaurants. Your guide meets you at the port or station and walks with you through whichever stops match what you came to see. The Sakaimachi shopping street sits close to the canal and fills with historical buildings from the Meiji, Taisho and Showa periods: the streets themselves feel like a time travel. If you want to eat, your guide can take you to a restaurant you choose. If you want to browse, the district is famous for glass and music boxes.
The stops you can visit depend on what interests you. The Otaru Music Box Hall occupies a Meiji-era building and holds about 80,000 music boxes collected from around the world, from jewelry boxes to ceramics to stuffed animals. LeTAO is a patisserie and cultural landmark known for its Double Fromage cheesecake. The main store offers desserts and café menus you can only get there, plus chocolates and baked goods to take home. Kikkogura is a sake brewery using 100% Hokkaido rice, and you can either join a brewery tour to watch the traditional process or do a tasting at the main store closer to the cruise port. The art museum occupies what was originally a bank hall, with six classical columns and a Lewis C. Tiffany stained glass gallery on the first floor. Tell your guide which of these matter to you, and the route builds around them.
The tour includes admission to the Nitori museum and pickup from the port or station. A licensed guide speaks English or Spanish. You can book a four-hour or seven-hour option depending on how many stops you want to fit in. If you need to take a bus or train to reach a stop, public transportation is available nearby and you pay that fare separately. The itinerary can shift if weather changes or other conditions require it.

Top questions
What languages is the tour guided in?
Live guide in English and Spanish.
Can children come?
Yes. Ticket types: Child (2 to 11 years); Infant (under 2).
What is the Otaru Canal like when you walk it?
The Otaru Canal is 1,140 meters long with gentle curves and 63 gas lamps along its length, making it one of Otaru's most iconic attractions. Stone warehouses and old buildings line the water and have been converted into shops and restaurants. The whole streetscape has won awards for being one of Japan's 100 best cityscapes and 100 most beautiful historical climates.
Can I choose which stops to visit, or is the route fixed?
You customize the route with your guide. Tell them which stops interest you (the canal, Sakaimachi shopping street, music box hall, LeTAO patisserie, sake brewery, or art museum), and the tour builds around your choices. If you want to eat at a specific restaurant, your guide can take you there.
Is pickup from the port or station included?
Yes, port or station pickup is included in the tour price. Your guide meets you at your arrival point and walks with you from there.
What does the four-hour tour versus the seven-hour tour let me do differently?
The four-hour option covers the main stops in a shorter timeframe. The seven-hour option gives you time to visit more attractions and linger longer at each one. Both routes are customizable based on what interests you.
Do I need to pay extra for food or shopping?
Food, drinks, souvenirs and shopping are not included and are your own expense. If the tour requires a bus or train ride to reach a stop, you pay that public transportation fee separately (approximately 20–30 USD per person depending on which stops you choose).
