The experience
Most first-time visitors to Otaru don't know where to start: the city has too many angles. The canal's gas-lit promenades, the old merchant quarter that was once Hokkaido's financial center, the sake brewery that's been running since 1899, the shopping streets lined with Western-style buildings. A private guide who speaks English and holds a government license in Japanese culture and history cuts through that. You tell them what draws you, and they build a route that fits your pace and your interests over either four or six hours.
The Otaru Canal itself anchors most visits: it was the distribution hub that made the city wealthy, then nearly disappeared when the docks moved, and now stands as a place to walk and breathe with locals. From there, the guide can take you into the Art Base (four historical bank buildings that now hold the Nitori Museum of Art and an Art Nouveau glass gallery), or down Sakaimachi Dori, a 900-meter shopping street of old merchant shops and Western architecture. If you're interested in how sake is made year-round in Otaru's cool climate, the Tanaka Sake Brewery (founded 1899) is a working distillery where you can taste plum wine, sweet sake and the local Takaragawa. Mt. Tengu, about 15 minutes by car from the city center, offers a ropeway to the summit and views over the Sea of Japan and the Shakotan Peninsula, though the ropeway fare is separate.
This is a walking tour, so you move on foot through the city with your guide. The meeting point is within a designated area of Otaru, and all surfaces and areas are wheelchair accessible. Entrance fees to museums and attractions, lunch, and any transportation costs beyond the tour itself are separate.

Top questions
What languages is the tour guided in?
Live guide in English and Japanese.
Can children come?
Yes. Ticket types: Child (6 to 11 years): free; Infant (under 6): free.
What exactly is the Otaru Canal and why do people visit it?
The Otaru Canal was built in the early 1900s to move goods by barge when Otaru was Hokkaido's distribution hub: a role so important the city's population once exceeded Sapporo's. When the docks moved, the canal was nearly landfilled, but it survived and is now lined with gas lamps and promenades where both residents and tourists walk and relax.
Can I really choose which sites to visit, or is the itinerary set?
You choose from a list of sites: the canal, historic buildings, shopping streets, the sake brewery, Mt. Tengu, and tell your guide which ones matter to you. The guide then customizes the route around your selections, so no two tours are the same.
What's the difference between the 4-hour and 6-hour options?
The 4-hour tour covers 2–3 sites. The 6-hour tour covers 3–4 sites. Both are private and customized. The longer one simply gives you more time to explore and move at a slower pace.
Is the guide's entry fee to museums included?
The guide's entry fees are covered only for the specific sites listed in the "What to Expect" section. Entrance fees for any attractions you visit are your own cost.
Do I need to arrange my own transportation to get around Otaru during the tour?
The tour is a walking tour, so you move on foot through the city with your guide. Public transportation options are available nearby if you need them, but the guide does not provide a private vehicle.
