The experience
The tour begins at Aomori Port International Cruise Terminal in the morning, where your licensed guide meets you for pickup. From there, the day moves through three distinct periods of Japanese history and culture. The Sannai-Maruyama Site is where most of the morning unfolds: a large settlement from the early to middle Jomon Period, roughly 5,900 to 4,200 years ago. Excavations have uncovered pit dwellings, graves, earthenware, stone tools, and bone and horn products that piece together daily life in an ancient village. In 2021, the site was registered as a UNESCO World Heritage site as part of the Jomon Monuments of Hokkaido and the Northeast.
After Sannai-Maruyama, the tour moves to Hirosaki Castle, Japan's northernmost existing castle tower and a National Important Cultural Property. The castle sits within a park where the original feudal-era structures (the tower, turrets, gates, and moat) remain largely intact. Few Japanese castles have been opened to the public while keeping their original appearance, and the grounds are designed to walk through at a pace that lets the historical atmosphere settle. The castle is also known as a cherry blossom viewing spot in spring, though the gates, bridges, and seasonal gardens hold their own appeal year-round.
The final major stop is Showa Daibutsu at Seiryuji Temple, a 21-meter seated bronze Buddha: the largest of its kind in Japan. The temple grounds include a five-story pagoda and gardens that shift with the seasons: cherry blossoms in spring, green foliage in summer, autumn colors, and snow in winter. Along the route, you'll eat fresh local seafood and regional specialties that reflect northern Japan's food culture. The tour returns to Aomori Port to finish, with the full day lasting six to eight hours depending on pace and conditions.
