The experience

What do you want to see in Aomori? Jomon-era archaeology, contemporary art, or the floats and history of the Nebuta Festival? The tour starts with you and your guide meeting on foot in a designated area of Aomori city. From there, the route is yours to shape. The operator gives you a list of attractions: the Sannai-Maruyama Site with its reconstructed Jomon settlement and six-pillared structure, the Aomori Museum of Art near the archaeological grounds, the Nebuta Museum Wa Rasse dedicated to the city's famous summer festival, the Aomori Contemporary Art Centre designed by architect Tadao Ando, and the Aomori Prefectural Folk Museum with its Jomon pottery and miniature hut reconstructions. You pick three or four that match what you came for, and the guide builds the six-hour day around them.

This is a walking tour, so you move on foot between your chosen sites. The guide is licensed and speaks English, and knows the city's history: Aomori's Edo Period grid pattern, the World War II bombing that reshaped it, and the contemporary buildings that now define the waterfront near Aomori Station. The guide handles the navigation and context. You handle the pace and the stops. Public transportation runs between sites, and you pay those fares separately. Entrance fees to museums and sites are also separate, though the guide's entry is covered for the attractions on the list.

The tour does not reach Hirosaki, which is outside Aomori city proper. Infants and small children can ride in a stroller, and all the main areas and surfaces are wheelchair accessible, as are the transportation options nearby. The tour suits all fitness levels, though the walking itself is the structure of the day.

Is this one for you? This tour is a walking day, so choose it if you want to move on foot between sites and set your own pace through the city. The six-hour window and the list of fixed attractions mean you shape the route but not the timing or the available options. If you need a driver and a car to reach sites outside Aomori city, or if you prefer a set itinerary without choosing, a different tour may suit you better.

Top questions

What languages is the tour guided in?

Live guide in English and Japanese.

Can children come?

Yes. Ticket types: Child (6 to 11 years): free; Infant (under 6): free.

What is the Sannai-Maruyama Site, and why does the guide include it?

The Sannai-Maruyama Site is a Jomon-era archaeological settlement first discovered in 1992 and declared a special national historic landmark in 2000. Visitors walk the large grounds freely, seeing reconstructed huts, settlements and the distinctive six-pillared structure that dominates the main site. The discovery of this site revolutionized the study of Japan's early Jomon period.

Can I visit multiple museums in one six-hour tour, or do I have to choose?

You choose three or four sites from the list before the tour starts, so you might combine the Aomori Museum of Art with the Nebuta Museum Wa Rasse, or pair the archaeological site with a contemporary art center: the guide builds the itinerary around your selections and the time available.

Does the guide's fee cover museum entry, or do I pay separately?

The guide's entry fee is covered only for the sights listed under the What to Expect attractions. You pay entrance fees for each museum or site you visit, and you also pay for any public transportation between locations.

Is this tour accessible if I use a wheelchair?

All main areas and surfaces in Aomori are wheelchair accessible, and the transportation options nearby are wheelchair accessible as well. The tour is a walking tour, so the pace and distance depend on which sites you choose and how long you spend at each one.

What should I know about the Aomori Contemporary Art Centre?

The Aomori Contemporary Art Centre (ACAC) sits on the grounds of Aomori Public College and was designed by internationally-acclaimed architect Tadao Ando. The building and its water feature blend with the surrounding woodland, and the center stages frequent exhibitions by Japanese and foreign contemporary artists. Buses run to the campus from Aomori Station.
