The experience
Eight hours gives you time to see both towns without rushing. The drive from Sapporo to Otaru takes about an hour, leaving most of the day to explore. Otaru's draw is its early 20th-century buildings: former banks and merchant shops now converted into museums, galleries, cafes and shops. The Otaru Canal itself, once the hub of Hokkaido's shipping trade, runs through the center with gas lamps and promenades. You'll walk Sakaimachi Dori, a 900-meter shopping street lined with old wooden storefronts, or climb Mt. Tengu by ropeway for views over the city and the Sea of Japan. The Tanaka Sake Brewery, operating since 1899, lets you taste local sake year-round because Otaru's cool climate suits fermentation any season.
Yoichi sits about 30 minutes south of Otaru and is home to the Yoichi Distillery, Nikka Whisky's production facility. Guided tours there cover the whisky-making process and Nikka's history, ending with a complimentary tasting, but you must book the tour in advance. Walk-ins are not admitted. The town is also known for apples and is developing as a wine region. A roadside station sells handmade apple pies and gelato made with local fruit, a practical stop to refuel during the drive.
You customize the itinerary before the tour, so you pick which three to four sites matter to you. The guide speaks English and Japanese. Your vehicle is private, meaning no other groups join you. The return drive to Sapporo takes about an hour. If you'd rather end your tour in Otaru to avoid the return journey, the tour time shortens by one hour.

Is this one for you?Choose the regular car if it's just you and one other person; the minivan works for a small family or group of four; the van suits larger groups up to seven. Because the itinerary is customizable, you build the day around what interests you most (whether that's the canal and shopping, the distillery, the sake brewery, or the mountain views), rather than following a fixed schedule.

Top questions
What languages is the tour guided in?
Live guide in English and Japanese.
Can children come?
Yes. Ticket types: Child (6 to 11 years): free; Infant (under 6): free.
What is the Otaru Canal and why do people visit it?
The Otaru Canal was built in the early 1900s as a shipping hub when Otaru was Hokkaido's distribution center, even outpacing Sapporo in population. Ships were unloaded via barges, and goods were distributed across the region. Once modern docks made it obsolete, the canal could have been filled in, but instead it was preserved as a public space. Today it's lined with gas lamps and walking paths where visitors stroll and relax, and the surrounding historic buildings house shops, cafes and galleries.
Can I visit the Yoichi Distillery on this tour?
Yes, the Yoichi Distillery is one of the stops you can choose. Nikka Whisky offers guided tours that explain the whisky production process and the company's history, followed by a complimentary tasting. You must book the guided tour in advance. The distillery does not admit visitors without a reservation, and self-guided tours are not available.
What are the vehicle options and how many people can each fit?
You choose your vehicle based on group size at checkout. The regular car seats up to two passengers; the minivan accommodates up to four; the van holds up to seven. All vehicles are private, so your group travels alone without other tour parties joining you.
Do entrance fees to museums and attractions come with the tour?
Entrance fees are not included and are paid separately at each site. Your guide and vehicle are included, and the guide's own entry fees are covered only for the three to four sites you select as part of your customized itinerary. Meals and other personal expenses are also separate.
How much time do I spend driving versus exploring?
The drive from Sapporo to Otaru takes about one hour each way. That leaves roughly six hours to spend at your chosen stops in Otaru and Yoichi. If you prefer not to return to Sapporo at the end, you can shorten the tour by one hour and stay in the Otaru area.
