The experience

Shinsekai, Hozenji Yokocho, Koreantown at Ikuno, Tenjimbashi-suji. These are the neighborhoods most visitors miss. The tour moves on foot through backstreets that have held their character for decades, stopping at places locals actually go. Kuromon Market stretches 580 meters under a roof, lined with about 150 shops selling fresh seafood, fugu, produce, Japanese sweets and prepared food. Sennichimae Doguyasuji is a 150-meter shopping street packed with every cooking utensil and kitchen tool imaginable. Hozenji Yokocho sits just minutes from the crowds at Dotonbori but feels separate: a maze of small traditional alleyways where locals pour water over the statue of Fudō Myō-ō before ducking into an izakaya for a drink.

Your guide is a government-licensed interpreter certified by the Japanese government, which means they hold deep knowledge of Japanese culture and history. They speak English and can answer questions about what you're walking through, not just point at it. Before the tour, you select three to four sites from the list of what's available: Dotonbori, Shinsaibashi-suji Shopping Street, the National Bunraku Theater, Sumiyoshi-taisha shrine, or others. Is food included in the tour price?

Food and drinks are not included. You'll stop to eat and drink along the way at restaurants and food stalls in the neighborhoods you visit, and you pay for those separately. The tour often passes through Kuromon Market and Dotonbori, both full of local food options.

What makes Kuromon Market worth a stop?

Kuromon Market is a roofed market stretching about 580 meters with roughly 150 shops. It specializes in fresh seafood: conger pike in summer and fugu (blowfish) in winter, plus produce, Japanese sweets, Western cakes, and prepared food. About 10% of the seafood shops specialize in fugu and hamo (pike conger).

Do I need to pay entrance fees to the sites we visit?

Entrance fees to individual sites are not included in the tour price. If your itinerary includes Sumiyoshi-taisha shrine or the National Bunraku Theater, you'll pay those fees separately. Many of the neighborhoods (Shinsekai, Hozenji Yokocho, Dotonbori, the shopping streets) are free to walk through.
