  • Dress in kimono and style hair
  • Take photos near Tsutenkaku or Japanese garden
  • Return to Kimono BOTAN and return kimono

The Experience

I didn’t expect to laugh so much just picking out a kimono — there are racks and racks at Kimono Botan, every color you can imagine. The woman helping us (I think her name was Emi?) kept pulling out patterns she thought would suit me, and honestly, I just let her decide after a while. She pinned my hair up with these little flowers, and I caught myself grinning at my own reflection. It’s funny how quickly you start to feel different when you’re wrapped up like that.

We stepped out into the street near Tsutenkaku, the tower peeking over old shop signs. Our photographer — Yuto — had this way of making it all feel casual, not staged. He’d say “just walk together,” or point out a spot where the light hit the garden wall just right. There was this moment under some maple trees in Tennoji Park where I could smell sweet grass and distant takoyaki stands, and for a second I forgot about the camera completely. You know that feeling when you’re both seen and invisible? Kind of like that.

People stared (in a friendly way), especially around Shinsekai’s arcades. A little kid waved at me; his mom bowed slightly as we passed. It felt oddly natural to be wandering Osaka in full kimono — maybe because everyone around us seemed happy we were trying it. After an hour or so of walking, laughing, posing (and tripping once on my hem — Yuto caught it on camera), we headed back to return everything. They said they’d send us more than 30 edited photos by email later, which is wild considering how fast it all went by.

What’s included

Your day includes all fees for kimono rental (with choices for men and kids too), professional hairstyling at Kimono Botan, a guided walk through Osaka’s gardens or downtown Shinsekai with a local photographer capturing your experience, plus over 30 edited digital photos sent to you afterward before returning your outfit together at the shop.
