Osaka food tour: Shinsekai, Dotonbori & Hozenji Temple
Three hours eating through Osaka's neighborhoods, not watching from a bus
A 3-hour food tour of Osaka led by an English-speaking local guide, starting in Shinsekai at an izakaya where you taste kushikatsu, edamame, sashimi, gyoza and fried chicken with drinks, then moving through Dotonbori to eat okonomiyaki and Michelin-starred takoyaki before visiting Hozenji Temple. The tour weaves food stops with the districts themselves: Janjan Yokocho Alley, Sennichimae Street's ramen stalls, and the neon of Dotonbori's street vendors.

The experience
You spend three hours moving through Osaka's two most food-dense neighborhoods with someone who knows which stall to enter and why. The tour starts in Shinsekai, where you'll sit in a retro-style izakaya and eat six pieces of kushikatsu (deep-fried skewered meat and vegetables), edamame, sashimi, a tofu salad with sesame dressing, and either fried gyoza or soy-flavored fried chicken, paired with two drinks: alcoholic or non-alcoholic, your choice. You'll also meet Billiken, a brass statue tucked into a corner of Janjan Yokocho Alley, a narrow lane lined with tiny restaurants and bars that have operated for decades.
From there the route moves into Dotonbori, where you'll eat okonomiyaki (a savory pancake layered with cabbage, protein and sauce) at a local restaurant, then stop at a street stall for Michelin-starred takoyaki: octopus balls that are crispy outside and molten inside. The guide walks you past ramen vendors and sweet shops, pointing out what matters and what's worth skipping. Hozenji Temple, covered in moss and lit by lanterns in the evening, closes out the afternoon with a quieter moment before the tour ends.
The guide speaks English throughout and explains the history and culture behind each stop, so you're not just eating but understanding why these dishes and places matter to Osaka. Public transportation runs nearby if you need it, and the pace suits all fitness levels.
