Okayama Castle & Korakuen Garden: 1-Day Walking Tour
The castle tower is a modern replica, but the garden beside it has kept its Edo-period layout for centuries.
A full-day guided walking tour of Okayama covers three historic sites: the black "Crow Castle" and its museum of feudal generals, Korakuen Garden (one of Japan's three most famous gardens), and the Kurashiki Bikan Historical Quarter, a preserved merchant town bisected by a willow-lined canal. The tour includes an English-speaking guide, public transport between locations, and entry to all sites. Moderate fitness is needed for the walking involved.

The experience
Okayama Castle anchors the morning. Built in 1597 during Japan's Sengoku Period of civil wars, the castle served as a key strategic stronghold for the Western Army. The original was destroyed in World War II. What stands today is a 1966 reconstruction. The distinctive black exterior earned it the nickname "Crow Castle." Inside the main keep, a museum walks through the stories of three generals whose decisions shaped Okayama's history, with your guide providing the context that ties the exhibits together. You'll also explore the castle grounds and observe the tower's unique dark facade up close.
From the castle, you head to Korakuen Garden, one of Japan's three most celebrated gardens. Construction began in 1687 under feudal lord Ikeda Tsunamasa. Later lords made adjustments, but the garden has largely preserved its Edo-period character. It opened to the public in 1884 and is designed as a Kaiyu, or "stroll" garden: meant to be walked rather than viewed from a single vantage point. Undulating paths connect different areas, and at each turn a new view emerges. Groves of various trees blossom at different times, making the garden dynamic across seasons. Tea houses, temples and ponds dot the landscape.
The afternoon takes you by train from Okayama station to Kurashiki, where the Bikan Historical Quarter preserves the townscape of an old merchant city. Streets on both sides are lined with Japanese-style storehouses and former family residences dating to when Kurashiki was an important trading hub. A canal with willows running down the middle adds to the character. Your guide takes you to key locations like Achi Shrine and Kurashiki Ivy Square, then leaves time for you to wander on your own: stepping into museums, shops or cafes that catch your eye. Kimono rental is available if you want to deepen the historical immersion, and other sites like the Ohara Museum of Art and Denim Street are nearby to explore.
