Step-by-step itinerary
Visit Samurai Residences and Shinsho-ji Temple
- Walk old bamboo forest path
- Tour three samurai residences
- Explore Naritasan Shinshoji Temple
- Visit Naritasan Park and shopping street
The experience
The tour starts with pickup from Narita airport or your hotel, then heads to Sakura to walk the old path beside the samurai residence street. Bamboo forests line both sides, creating the atmosphere the area held centuries ago. The gently curving slope is fenced with four-sided fences and bamboo blinds, the kind that would have surrounded a castle town. Three samurai residences stand open to the public here: the Former Kawara Family Residence (a cultural property designated by Chiba Prefecture), the Former Tajima Family Residence (designated by Sakura City), and the Former Takei Family Residence. Your guide explains the history and layout of each one as you move through them.
The second half of the day centers on Naritasan Shinsho-ji Temple, one of Japan's most famous temples. The main hall is majestic, and the inner sanctuary holds splendid carvings. The temple is especially known for its goma prayer ceremony. Two structures here are designated as important cultural properties: the Niomon Gate and the three-story pagoda. Nearby, the vast Naritasan Park lets you see seasonal beauty depending on when you visit. A historic shopping street runs along the approach to the temple, where you can pick up local specialties after exploring. The temple closes at 4pm. If you book a later departure, your guide will show you different spots in the area instead.
A national licensed guide travels with you the entire seven hours, speaking English or Chinese and answering questions about the spiritual and historical significance of both sites. The private vehicle means no waiting for other groups and no fixed schedule beyond your pickup time. Dietary restrictions like vegetarian, vegan or gluten-free can be accommodated if you note them when booking. Infants can travel in a pram or stroller, and child seats for children under six are provided by the operator.
