The experience
The tour starts with the things Nara is famous for (the hundreds of free-roaming deer in Nara Park and the colossal Great Buddha inside Todaiji), but the guide connects them to the stories behind them. You'll learn why Japan built such an enormous Buddha, why deer are considered sacred here, and the difference between a Buddhist temple and a Shinto shrine. The route passes through the massive Nandaimon Gate, one of the physical anchors of the experience. Questions are encouraged throughout: ask about history, Buddhism, Shinto, Japanese culture, food, or anything else that comes up.
The pace is yours to set. If you want to linger with the deer, feed them, or spend extra time at a particular temple, the guide adjusts. If you're drawn to photography or want to move quickly through the highlights, that works too. The guide is a photographer as well, so candid shots of you at Todaiji, walking through the park, or interacting with the deer happen naturally. You don't have to stage moments or ask for help capturing them.
Hotel pickup is available on request for central locations. Public transportation options are nearby if you prefer to meet the guide at a specific point in the city. The experience runs about 3 hours, and children from age 1 can join.

Can I spend most of the tour just feeding and photographing the deer in Nara Park?
Yes. The guide adjusts the route and pace based on what interests you most. If deer are your priority, you can spend as much time as you want in the park, and the guide will photograph those moments for you.
What's the difference between the private tour and the regular walking tour?

What exactly is the Great Buddha at Todaiji, and why is it so large?
Todaiji houses a colossal bronze Buddha statue, one of the largest in the world. The guide explains the historical and religious reasons Japan built it, and you'll stand face-to-face with it inside the temple during the tour.
Is hotel pickup included, or do I need to meet the guide somewhere?
Hotel pickup is available on request for central locations in Nara. If you prefer, you can meet the guide at a public transportation point near the tour start instead.
