Step-by-step itinerary
Explore Nagoya and Arimatsu
- Meet guide at Nagoya port or hotel
- Visit historic Arimatsu town
- Enjoy hands-on Arimatsu shibori experience
- Explore Nagoya Castle and gardens
The experience
You arrive at the Port of Nagoya or your hotel and meet your National Licensed Guide, who tailors the day around what interests you most. The tour runs eight hours and includes a private vehicle for the whole time, so you move between stops without coordinating separate transport or timing around group schedules. Lunch is built in, and the guide can accommodate dietary needs if you flag them when you book.
The core stops are Arimatsu, a preserved Edo-period town famous for its 400-year shibori tie-dyeing tradition, and Nagoya Castle, built by Tokugawa Ieyasu in the 17th century with gold-leaf doors and walls. At Arimatsu, you don't just walk through: you work with the dye yourself at the Arimatsu-Narumi Shibori Kaikan, learning the hand-folding and binding techniques from artisans, then creating a piece to take home. The castle visit covers its architecture, gardens and samurai history. Because this is private, you can linger at either stop, skip ahead if you've seen enough, or ask the guide to reroute to somewhere else entirely (a neighborhood market, a different museum, a shrine), if that fits your interests better.
Three purchase options let you swap the second major stop: Arimatsu and Nagoya Castle; Arimatsu and the TOYOTA Museum; or the TOYOTA Museum and Nagoya Castle. Pick the combination that matches what you want to learn about on the day. Infants and small children can travel in a pram or stroller, and specialized infant seats are available if needed.

Top questions
What languages is the guide in?
Live guide in English, Spanish and Chinese.
Can children come?
Yes. Ticket types: Child (2 to 11 years); Infant (under 2).
What is the Arimatsu shibori experience actually like?
At the Arimatsu-Narumi Shibori Kaikan, you watch artisans demonstrate the hand tie-dyeing technique that has been used since the Edo period, then try it yourself. You fold and bind fabric, apply dye, and create an original piece you can keep as a souvenir. The museum also has exhibits on the history and delicacy of the craft, and a shop selling tie-dyed textiles and accessories if you want to buy more.
Can I customize the tour if I don't want to see one of the main stops?
Yes. Because this is a private tour, the itinerary is flexible. If you'd rather skip Arimatsu or the castle and visit somewhere else instead, let your guide know in advance and they'll adjust the day to match your preferences.
What's included in the price?
The private vehicle, your National Licensed Guide for the full eight hours, pickup from your cruise port or hotel, entry fees to whichever sites you choose, the shibori experience fee if you pick the Arimatsu option, and local lunch are all included. You pay separately for any souvenirs or personal expenses.
How does the tour work if I'm arriving on a cruise ship?
Your guide meets you at your cruise terminal arrival gate. The eight-hour tour is timed so you return to the port in time for the ship's departure. Let the operator know your ship's schedule when you book so they can plan the stops and timing accordingly.
