The experience

You start from Nagoya Station and travel by tour bus through the Hida region's changing landscape, arriving in Takayama by mid-morning. Your guide (speaking English, Spanish, French or Chinese) walks you through the Sanmachi district, the old merchant quarter where wooden storefronts and sake breweries line narrow streets unchanged since the Edo period. You get about an hour free to grab lunch at a local restaurant, hunt for souvenirs, or fill your camera with the town's wooden facades and quiet corners.

The bus then climbs into Shirakawago, a UNESCO World Heritage Site built into a mountain valley where dozens of farmhouses still have the steep, thatched roofs designed to shed heavy snow. Your guide takes you inside one of these houses to show you how the structure works (the high ceilings, the open hearth, the way the roof angles), and explains what daily life looked like in an Edo-era farming family. You'll hike a short path up to a lookout point that frames the whole village below, and your guide will photograph you there. The rest of the afternoon is yours to walk the main street, sample local snacks, or sit in the quiet.

The return journey to Nagoya takes the afternoon. If you've chosen to end the tour elsewhere, you can stay in Takayama or transfer to a bus heading to Kanazawa instead, though seats on those onward buses are limited and may require a fold-out seat for the final leg. If no space is available, the operator will book you a public highway bus ticket from Shirakawago to your chosen destination. Luggage stays on the vehicle throughout, so you travel light between stops.

What’s included

  • Guided tour with a live guide speaking English, Spanish, French or Chinese.
  • entry fee into a thatched-roof farmhouse in Shirakawago.
  • luggage storage on the tour bus throughout the day.
  • flexible drop-off at Takayama, Kanazawa or back to Nagoya Station (arrange at booking or by email before departure).

Top questions

What languages is the guide in?

Live guide in English, Spanish, French and Chinese.

Can children come?

Yes. Ticket types: Child (6 to 12 years); Infant (under 6): free.

What exactly is inside the thatched-roof house in Shirakawago that the guide shows you?

The farmhouse is a working or preserved example of an Edo-era dwelling, and your guide explains the architecture (the steep thatch roof, the open central hearth, and the layout) along with how families actually lived there. You walk through the interior and see how the structure was built to handle the region's heavy snow and mountain climate.

How much free time do I get in Takayama and Shirakawago to explore on my own?

Takayama gives you about one hour to eat, shop or photograph the merchant district at your own pace. In Shirakawago, after the guided walk through the village and the hike to the lookout, you have additional free time to wander the main street, sample local food, or rest before the return journey.

Can I end the tour in Kanazawa instead of returning to Nagoya?

Yes, drop-off is available at Takayama, Kanazawa, or Shirakawago if you arrange it during booking or by email before the tour starts. From Shirakawago, you'll transfer to an onward tour bus heading to your chosen city, though seats are limited and you may sit in a fold-out seat. If no space exists, the operator will arrange a public highway bus ticket for you.

Is lunch included, and where do people usually eat in Takayama?

Lunch is not included in the tour price. During your free hour in Takayama, you'll find restaurants and small eateries throughout the Sanmachi district serving local specialties like Hida beef and soba noodles. Your guide can point you toward options, but you choose where and what to eat.
