Step-by-step itinerary
Half-day walking tour of Nagasaki
- Hotel pick-up in the morning
- Visit up to three chosen sites
The experience
Your guide is a government-certified interpreter with formal training in Japanese culture and history, so the stories behind each site go deeper than a self-guided walk would reach. You choose the sites before the tour starts (pick 2–3 for a 4-hour tour or 3–4 for a 6-hour one), and your guide builds the route around what you want to see. The meeting point is on foot within a designated area of Nagasaki, so there's no vehicle pickup. Public transport runs nearby if you need it to get there.
The sites themselves span centuries. The Peace Park marks the hypocenter of the August 9, 1945 bombing, with a black monolith at the center and a surviving pillar from the Urakami Cathedral nearby. Glover Garden sits on the hill where Western merchants settled after the port opened in 1859, and the Former Glover House is the oldest Western-style wooden building in Japan. Sofukuji Temple and Kofukuji Temple both date to the early 1600s and were built in Chinese architectural style for the city's Chinese residents. Dejima, once a man-made island used to control foreign trade during Japan's two centuries of isolation, is being reconstructed today. The Nagasaki Confucius Shrine, with its 72 life-size stone statues of Confucius' disciples, and the Twenty Six Martyrs Monument both tell stories of the city's religious crossroads. Museums like the Atomic Bomb Museum and the Museum of History and Culture add context, and the Dutch Slope and Meganebashi bridge offer quieter moments in the walk.
This is a walking and public transport tour, so you'll be on foot for most of it and may use local buses or trains to move between sites. All areas and surfaces are wheelchair accessible, and the tour suits all fitness levels. Entrance fees to sites, lunch and transportation costs are separate from the tour price.

Top questions
What languages is the tour guided in?
Live guide in English and Japanese.
Can children come?
Yes. Ticket types: Child (6 to 11 years): free; Infant (under 6): free.
Can I visit all the sites in Nagasaki on this tour?
No. You choose a maximum of 2–3 sites for the 4-hour tour or 3–4 sites for the 6-hour tour before the tour starts, and your guide takes you to those. The city has too many landmarks to fit into a half-day, so your guide helps you pick based on what interests you most.
What is the Nagasaki Peace Park and what will I see there?
The Peace Park is a complex that commemorates the atomic bombing of August 9, 1945. At its center is the Hypocenter Park with a black monolith marking the explosion's epicenter, a damaged pillar from the Urakami Cathedral that survived the blast, and an exposed layer of soil below the surface showing broken roof tiles, bricks and glass from the explosion.
What makes Glover Garden worth visiting?
Glover Garden is an open-air museum on the hill where Western merchants settled after Nagasaki's port opened to foreign trade in 1859. The main draw is the Former Glover House, the oldest Western-style wooden building in Japan, built by Scottish merchant Thomas Glover who later played a role in Japan's industrialization and the Meiji Restoration.
Do I need to arrange my own transportation to the meeting point?
Yes. Your guide meets you on foot within a designated area of Nagasaki, so you'll need to get there yourself. Public transportation options run nearby if you need them.
Are entrance fees to museums and temples included in the tour price?
No. Entrance fees, transportation costs and lunch are not included and are paid separately. Your guide will take you to the sites you've chosen, but you cover the cost of entry.
Can I book this tour as a private group, or will I be with other travelers?
You cannot combine multiple tour groups on this tour. If you book, your guide is dedicated to your group for the duration.
