Nagano private tour: Customize your day with a local guide
Build your own itinerary across Nagano's temples, mountain valleys, and post towns.
A private full-day tour of Nagano or Matsumoto with an English-speaking local guide and dedicated vehicle, customized to your interests and pace. You pick one of three route options: Nagano Standard (temples, hot springs, shrines), Matsumoto Standard (castle, farms, museums), or Extended Route (cross-region journeys like the Nakasendo Way or Kamikochi), and the guide shapes the stops and timing to fit. Pickup from your hotel or station is included. Entrance fees are paid separately at each site. Not all destinations fit in a single day, so the final route depends on your pickup location, season, and preferences.

The experience
The tour runs up to eight hours with a private vehicle and guide who speaks English. You're not following a fixed schedule. Instead, you tell the guide what interests you, whether that's walking through Jigokudani Monkey Park to see wild macaques in their mountain habitat, exploring Zenkoji Temple in Nagano City, or visiting Matsumoto Castle. The guide then builds the day around those choices, adjusting for travel time and how long you want to spend at each place. If you pick the Nagano Standard route, you might see the cedar-lined path to a mountain shrine, wander through Shibu Onsen's narrow streets and traditional bathhouses, or stop in Obuse to browse the Hokusai Museum and local sake shops. The Matsumoto Standard covers the castle, Ishii Miso Brewery, Daio Wasabi Farm with its spring-water fields, and the Japan Ukiyo-e Museum.
The Extended Route opens longer distances: you can cross between Nagano and Matsumoto, venture into Kamikochi's alpine valleys with clear rivers and forest trails, walk the historic Nakasendo Way through post towns like Tsumago and Magome with their preserved wooden houses, or tackle the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route with its dramatic mountain scenery and cable cars. These longer routes may carry a travel supplement depending on distance. The guide coordinates the timing so you're not rushed, and drop-off can happen at your hotel, a train station, or another landmark you choose. Bottled water is fine in the vehicle. Food and coffee are not, to keep the space clean for the next traveler.
Pickup happens from hotels or stations in Nagano City or Matsumoto City at no extra charge. If you're staying elsewhere (Yudanaka Onsen, Nozawa Onsen, or another area), contact the operator before booking to confirm availability and any additional fees. The guide will recommend the best route pairing if you're unsure, and extra time can be added on request after you've booked. Entrance fees to temples, castles, museums, and parks are not included and are paid directly at each site.
